Welcome to This Week in Fandom, the OTW’s round up of things which are happening! Before we get started, did you see that the new His Dark Materials TV show has cast its Will? What do you think of the choice? Are you as excited for the series as we are? Let us know in the comments!


One series that doesn’t seem to be shining lately is the current X-Men movie franchise. The latest and apparently final title in the current run, X Men: Dark Phoenix, took less money on its opening weekend than any of its predecessors; Deadline suggested that the movie is likely to lose over $100m. Reviewers for Variety, Empire, and NBC praised Dark Phoenix for its nuanced relationship dynamics and exploration of female power; but the overall critical reception has been lukewarm, with other commentators labeling Simon Kinberg’s movie ‘forgettable’ and ‘minor-league’. One particularly derisive article on Vulture gets a good deal of (spoilerific!) comic mileage out of one of the film’s key action sequences, which involves a lot of effort on the part of the X-Men to make a very short journey indeed. As most of the reviewers note, Dark Phoenix’s underperformance doesn’t much matter. The whole franchise is likely to be rebooted by Disney as they integrate the X-Men into the wider MCU.

Happy SysAdmin Day 2018

Today is SysAdmin Day, an opportunity to celebrate the work of systems administrators everywhere. We think it’s especially important as the nature of the job means that a successful systems administrator is likely to go unnoticed.

Here at the OTW, our Systems team carries out essential work supporting, troubleshooting and expanding the infrastructure that supports all of our projects, including Archive of Our Own, Fanlore, Open Doors, and Transformative Works and Cultures. They also maintain the servers for a whole host of internal services at the OTW: our internal wiki and email, the Elections website and our main website.

Transformative Works and Cultures Vol. 26

Transformative Works and Cultures has released No. 26.

The essays in this March 15, 2018, issue focus on Social TV Fandom and the Media Industries, guest edited by Myles McNutt.

This exciting issue contains essays about Sleepy Hollow, The 100, Wynonna Earp, and Twin Peaks: The Return fans and fan engagement. To discuss the “social” in “social TV,” contributors discuss use of Twitter, #hashtags, and emoticons. Also featured is an interview with Flourish Klink of Chaotic Good Studios.

The next issue of TWC, No. 27, is a guest-edited issue on Tumblr and Fandom. It will appear on June 15, 2018.

We welcome Symposium articles for our 10th anniversary issue, which focuses on the Future of Fandom.
